When Allen and I first moved out together, our apartment basically looked like an IKEA catalog. Although at the time I loved the look, I found myself quickly growing out of it. It felt very "office" like to me and had no personality. I actually stopped by the other week, and they have definitely stepped it up and come out with more cozy, "homey" pieces but up until recently, their designs were more so all about simplicity. Now in our loft, some of my favorite furniture pieces are from IKEA but with a little personal twist! This has to be the Easiest IKEA Furniture Hack ever, BUT I just had to share it with you guys!
If you're anything like me, you've spent hours on Pinterest looking at DIYs, and after you start the project, you end up frustrated and over it in 10 minutes. So when I looked into how I could put my own special touch on IKEA furniture, I went with the simplest route, changing knobs and spray paint!
The first little IKEA Furniture Hack I did was on our TV stand. I looked everywhere for a perfect TV stand with storage and the ones I ended up loving seemed SO similar to this one from IKEA, but just a little more spiced up. All I did was go to Target and pick up some gold spray paint for the legs to add that slight glam accent and Anthropologie for these gorgeous knobs.
For the TV stand- since it originally didn't come with holes to screw on handles- I had to get a drill and measure out the center of the drawer and drill a hole. That's as difficult as it got- thank god lol. For the legs, I just spray painted them twice letting the coats dry in between, and that's it! The best part is, you can have fun with the spray paint color and knobs!
Next up, shoe storage!! I can't even describe how life-changing this has been for us! In our loft, the only sort of closet we have downstairs is for the laundry machine- not the smartest floorplan design if you ask me! I knew I didn't want to have shoes just out there in the open but at the same time couldn't find a shoe cabinet that went with our place! And then finally, we came across this one from IKEA and were obsessed!
I love the clean lines of the design, and also the dark grey stain is just PERFECT! It seriously looks like it came with our apartment how much it matches our floors and other details. I knew off the bat I would change the knobs- let's be honest, the original ones are not pretty lol- and I was so happy this one already had the holes in each drawer! Yay, no drilling!
For the knobs, we went to our favorite furniture store CB2 and picked out two different styles but kept them gold for a more cohesive look. Since the top of the shoe storage has a standard pull out drawer, I wanted to switch things up and have that look distinct from where you place your shoes.
That's everything I wanted to share on my Easiest Ikea Furniture Hack! If you already have furniture in your home you're kind of tired of, give this a try! You'll be surprised how much of a difference it makes. Whoever asks where we got our TV Stand and shoe storage can't believe they're from IKEA! I hope you guys enjoyed these quick tips! Since our downstairs area finally feels complete, I'm going to be decorating the bedroom next! I'll make sure to post updates throughout the process! :)
Hey girl!
ReplyDeleteI started chuckling when I read the first few lines of your post...that was me yesterday. I spent the better part of the day looking all over the internet for the perfect TV stand and felt exactly like the way you described!
Funnily enough, I was look at the exact same Ikea stand and brainstorming how to personalize it, and then your post popped up on my Pinterest! It was meant to me, because I LOVE what you did.
I did want to make sure I get the right one though...did you use the Bya? (https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80227797/?query=BY%C3%85S&icid=iba|us|unbxdsuggestion|201811132211556208_1) It comes with this very blah wooden platform, not those cute legs on yours. Did you attach those legs yourself?
Thank you for the inspiration!
